Firearms 101: Home and Family Safety is designed for new firearm owners, prospective owners, spouses, parents, grandparents, families, and anyone who wants to better understand firearms in a comfortable, non-intimidating classroom environment.

This beginner-friendly course focuses on the responsibilities that come with having firearms in the home. Students learn fundamental firearm safety, basic firearm operation, secure storage, unauthorized-access prevention, ammunition safety, and practical steps families can take to create a safer household.

No previous firearms experience is required.

Course Overview

Firearms 101 is the recommended starting point for students who are new to firearms or who want a structured safety refresher before moving into live-fire training.

Students learn how common firearms function, how to recognize and verify firearm condition, safe handling principles, the difference between a magazine and chamber, secure storage options, ammunition safety, and how household circumstances affect firearm access and storage decisions.

Special emphasis is placed on children, teenagers, visiting family members, guests, and preventing unauthorized access.

The goal is not simply to teach students how to handle a firearm.

The goal is to help students become safer and more responsible firearm owners and family members.

• Basic handgun, rifle, and shotgun familiarization

• Why removing a magazine does not necessarily mean a firearm is unloaded

• Secure firearm storage options
• Cable locks, lock boxes, cases, and firearm safes
• Preventing unauthorized access

• Teenagers and changing household risks
• Visitors, grandchildren, babysitters, and guests

Hands-On Classroom Instruction

Students participate in supervised hands-on exercises designed to reinforce safe firearm handling.

Depending on the class format, students may work with training firearms, inert ammunition, firearm locks, storage devices, and other instructional equipment.

Students learn how to:

• Maintain safe muzzle direction
• Keep the trigger finger properly indexed
• Identify basic firearm components
• Understand firearm condition
• Recognize the difference between a magazine and chamber
• Safely receive and handle a firearm under instructor supervision
• Evaluate common firearm-storage options

There is no live-fire requirement for this course.

Home & Family Safety

One of the primary differences between Firearms 101 and many traditional introductory firearm classes is its emphasis on what happens after the firearm comes home.

Students are encouraged to consider questions such as:

• Who lives in the household?
• Are children or teenagers present?
• Do grandchildren or other children visit?
• Who knows where firearms are stored?
• Who has access to keys, combinations, or codes?
• How is ammunition secured?
• Could a visitor or unauthorized person gain access?
• What happens if household circumstances change?
• Does the family have a plan if someone temporarily should not have firearm access?

Students complete a Home Firearm Safety Plan to help identify potential risks and opportunities to improve firearm security.
