Medical Response for Gunshot Trauma

Emergency Bleeding Control, Scene Safety, and Action Planning

Medical Response for Gunshot Trauma is a safety-focused emergency response course designed to help students recognize life-threatening bleeding, take immediate action, communicate effectively with 911, and prepare a practical emergency response plan.

This class includes STOP THE BLEED® bleeding-control content taught by an instructor and focuses on the lifesaving skills most likely to matter before EMS arrives: direct pressure, wound packing concepts, pressure dressings, tourniquet application, scene safety, communication, and emergency action planning.

This course is appropriate for firearm owners, families, instructors, range staff, church safety teams, security personnel, workplace teams, and anyone who wants to be better prepared for a traumatic bleeding emergency.

Course Overview

Severe bleeding can become life-threatening within minutes. In many emergencies, the people already on scene are the first ones who can make a difference before EMS, law enforcement, or fire/rescue personnel arrive.

This course teaches students how to think through the first critical moments after a traumatic injury, including how to stay safe, call for help, identify serious bleeding, and use basic bleeding-control tools.

Students will learn how to build a simple emergency action plan for the range, home, workplace, church, vehicle, or public setting.

The emphasis is on fast recognition, safe action, clear communication, and effective bleeding control.

STOP THE BLEED® Training Component

This class incorporates core STOP THE BLEED® concepts, including the three basic bleeding-control actions taught through the national program:

  • Applying firm, direct pressure
  • Packing a wound when appropriate
  • Applying a tourniquet correctly

STOP THE BLEED® is a national bleeding-control training program designed to empower bystanders to help control severe bleeding until first responders arrive. ACS STOP THE BLEED states that the course helps people become immediate responders by learning how to control bleeding from serious accidents or disasters, and the Department of Defense describes STOP THE BLEED® as a program designed to train and equip the public to treat severe bleeding injuries until first responders arrive.

Why This Course Matters

Emergency medical response is an essential part of responsible preparedness. Owning a firearm, training at a range, attending events, or working around tools, vehicles, equipment, or crowds all carry the possibility of serious injury.

A prepared person should know more than how to defend themselves. They should also know how to help preserve life when someone is injured.

This course helps students build confidence, reduce hesitation, and understand what to do during the first critical minutes of a bleeding emergency.
